I went to this girls Instagram who recently got dreads and ofcourse when I looked at her following the first few blogs were dedicated to dreads. Now the first thought in my head was oh cool I like appreciation blogs but when I clicked it, there was hundreds of pictures but only of white people. There was ONE picture of a light skinned person which hurt me even more. It’s sad how something which used to be the ONLY option for blacks (during slavery and such) is now just a trend. Blacks didn’t ask for their heads to be dreaded spending months on slave ships being unable to do anything about their matting head. Even now so many black girls have no other option to keep their hair safe but to get dreads. I see someone understanding the purpose of dreads is knowing where you came from and making a statement rocking the hell out of things that have been a burden as understandable. Instead of some dedicating themselves to upkeep, they’ll just go weeks without washing their fine hair to get this desired look. And Instead of having to shave their head they can just condition and take their dreads out. Completely sabotaging the COMPLETE purpose of them? I’m not saying upkept and nice dreads are only for people of color.. PLEASE FEEL FREE TO EXPRESS YOURSELVES.. but it’d be nice if it would stop being a fashion statement and maybe be a COMMITMENT for some of you.
